For this video, I took inspiration from the name of the script developed by vrcvs for Norns called “Neve,” which means “snow” in Italian. I wanted to pair the script with a field recording of ice cracking, melting, and producing a whole range of disparate sounds, which I was then able to sample using the Torso S4 to turn them into a full-fledged beat track, occasionally adjusting several parameters simultaneously via the S4’s Perform section.
It’s great to hear the sound of the ice evolve from something akin to vinyl scratching to something more structured, and then, at the end of the track, dissolve into a sea of metallic ringing, washed by a massive reverb.
The bass line, on the other hand, is a sequence that goes from the Keystep 37 mkII to the MVave FM-1 running the FM106 firmware, the Juno-106 emulation of KR-106 ported to the FM-1.
