How do bees communicate? A single honeybee finds flowers two kilometers away, flies home, and within a short time her sisters are landing in the same patch, guided only by a dance performed in total darkness. In this video we follow one forager on one trip and decode the waggle dance step by step: how it encodes direction, how it encodes distance, how scientists proved it, and why young bees have to learn it. Straight up means "toward the sun." • The longer the waggle run, the farther the food. Roughly one second per kilometer; NC State Extension gives 2.5 seconds ≈ 2,600 m. The exact scale varies between colonies. • Bees measure distance by optic flow (how much the scenery moves past their eyes). A patterned tunnel made bees dance as if the food were much farther away, and recruits searched at that exaggerated distance (Esch et al., Nature, 2001). • For food closer than about 50 m, bees perform a round dance instead. • Karl von Frisch decoded the dance language and shared the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. • Radar-tracked recruits flew almost straight to the area the dance indicated, then searched for the exact spot. Recruits released away from the hive flew in the danced direction from where they were released (Riley et al., Nature, 2005). • Bees raised without experienced dancers made messier dances. Direction improved with age, but distance errors persisted (Dong et al., Science, 2023). • Swarm scouts use the same dance to choose a new nest site. When roughly 15 scouts gather at one site, the swarm takes off (Thomas Seeley, Cornell). SOURCES • Riley JR, Greggers U, Smith AD, Reynolds DR, Menzel R (2005).
