What Was Life Really Like for a Cowboy in the Old West?

You wake in the dark. The ground is cold under your blanket, coffee is boiling over a campfire, and two thousand cattle are shifting in the gray light before dawn. You are not a movie hero and you are not a gunslinger. You are a cowboy. Forget the movies for a moment. In this video, you will find out how the real cowboys of the Old West lived: who they actually were, what they ate, what they wore, how much they earned, and why the famous high-noon duel is almost entirely a myth. You will meet the vaqueros who taught Texas cowboys their trade, the Black cowboys Nat Love and Bill Pickett, the chuck wagon built by Charles Goodnight, the Wild Bill Hickok shooting in Springfield, the O.K. Corral fight in Tombstone, the research of historians Robert Dykstra and Roger McGrath, the cowgirl Lucille Mulhall, and the showman Buffalo Bill who turned a hard job into a legend.
