At Sudong, at the start of the Chosin campaign, First Lieutenant Kurt Chew-Een Lee walked ahead of his own line in the dark and shouted at the hidden Chinese positions in Chinese, words he later rendered as "Don't shoot! I'm Chinese!", to draw their fire and expose their guns. Weeks later, wounded and with one arm still immobilized, he left the hospital, walked the last ten miles back to his Marines and led a platoon of 1st Battalion, 7th Marines across three frozen ridges to the surrounded defenders of Fox Hill.
