Thailand Is Losing Its Tourists — And Now It's Coming for the Expats

Thailand welcomed 32.9 million foreign tourists in 2025, down more than 7% and its first fall in a decade outside the pandemic, and 2026 is running lower again. At the exact same time, the rules on foreigners already living there keep tightening: 30-day visa-free stays, capped visa runs, a home-country-only DTV, tax on remitted income, tougher banks, foreigner pricing and a proposed 450-baht entry fee. Here is how the two stories connect, the honest case for the new rules, and where Thailand is really heading. If you live in Thailand, or used to, what was the rule that made you think about leaving?
