Ott’s Exotic Plants isn’t your typical greenhouse & nursery. Thanks to its waterfall & mountain of mums, it has become a fun destination for anyone in the Philadelphia area. It also has a beautiful conservatory of exotic plants on display year round for sale.
Located in Schwanksville, PA - about 40 min. from Philadelphia - it is a fantastic, free day trip in the fall, when Mum Mountain is in full bloom. But walking through the greenhouse in the winter helps you forget about the frigid temperature outside!
As you walk in, you’re greeted by a huge waterfall that empties into a koi pond. The tropical plants surround you, & you feel instantly transported to a warm, beautiful place.
Take the time to explore this area of the greenhouse. Don’t miss the stairs that lead to a path over the waterfall, offering a bird’s-eye view of the pond.
One of the most popular things to do in Montgomery County during the fall season is Mum Mountain. The mountain is 40 feet tall, 175 feet wide, & covered each year in 6,000-10,000 gorgeous mums of every color. This fall tradition looks straight out of a storybook.
When Godfrey Ott bought the property to open a nursery, dirt was cleared to create a parking lot. That dirt was thrown into a large pile, which wasn't very appealing! So Ott directed his sons to grab mums they had grown in the field & plant them on the dirt mound. Mum Mountain was born!
There are several winding staircases leading you to the top of the mountain, & it’s worth the climb for the view! Typically, the mums are in full bloom towards the last half of October.
It’s part garden, part hidden oasis, & completely unexpected. Whether you’re searching for pumpkins, planning the perfect fall photo, or just looking for a colorful escape from the city, Ott’s Exotic Plants is a must-visit destination. It’s quirky, magical, & turns something simple - like mums - into something unforgettable. Perfect for solo explorers, families, & couples!
