Shiraito Falls Karuizawa

Shiraito Falls in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most elegant and distinctive waterfalls. Approximately 3 meters high and 70 meters wide, the waterfall forms a graceful curved curtain of water as underground springwater emerges from the rocks and flows downward in hundreds of delicate streams. The name “Shiraito” (白糸) means “white threads,” a perfect description of the waterfall’s appearance. Rather than one powerful cascade, countless thin streams of crystal-clear groundwater gently fall across the rock wall, creating the impression of hundreds of white threads hanging side by side. The springwater is believed to originate from the underground water system around Mount Asama, adding another fascinating element to this beautiful natural attraction. The combination of the flowing springwater, moss-covered rocks, and surrounding forest creates a peaceful atmosphere that feels very different from the dramatic, powerful waterfalls found elsewhere in Japan. 🌿 A Beautiful Destination in Every Season Shiraito Falls is a popular destination throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience. 🌱 Spring & Summer — The surrounding forest becomes lush and green, providing a cool and refreshing atmosphere. The sound of the flowing springwater makes this an especially pleasant place to escape the summer heat. 🍁 Autumn — The surrounding trees transform into beautiful shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a spectacular contrast with the white streams of the waterfall. ❄️ Winter — The landscape takes on a peaceful winter atmosphere, and visitors can experience the magical Shiraito Midwinter Light Up, when the waterfall and surrounding scenery are illuminated. 🚶 Easy Access One of the great advantages of Shiraito Falls is how easy it is to visit. From the nearby parking area, a gentle walking trail of approximately 150–200 meters, consisting of gravel and paved sections, leads to the waterfall. There is no admission fee to view Shiraito Falls. For visitors arriving by public transportation, buses operated by Kusakaru Kotsu connect Karuizawa Station with the “Shiraito no Taki” bus stop. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes, followed by a short walk of around 5 minutes to the falls. If you're driving, the falls can be reached via the scenic Shiraito Highland Way. The road is a toll road, with a standard-car toll of approximately ¥500, and parking is available near the waterfall.
