Li Ka-shing's story is one of rags-to-riches. Born in 1928 in Chaozhou in Southeastern China, he fled to Hong Kong with his family in 1940 during the second Sino-Japanese war. He started out as an apprentice at a plastics factory and slowly worked his way up to be factory manager at just 18. Li was the first Chinese to take over a British-backed conglomerate and today he has investments all over the world. His fortune is worth US$35.3 billion. Turning 90 in July, he is retiring, handing the reins over to his son.
