A naat that actually indicts us. — Mudassir Abdullah

This kalam is not a celebration. It is a confession.
It asks the one question the ummah avoids: we decorate the doors and rooftops of our cities in his ﷺ name — but where in our character is even one spark of his? We are absorbed in the lattice of his resting place, while the garden he planted is being netted by autumn. We turn past the chapter of Thawr and Badr and stop only at the stories that entertain us.
And the closing couplet breaks it open: he who was the smile on the face of life — was made to weep by grief for us.
Recite it once. Let it be absorbed. Then sit with it.

He who was the beauty on the face of life, he who was the proof of the road to salvation —
the very footprints of that guide were erased by the travellers themselves.
For the labours of the one who bore my sorrow, what a fine reward I gave in return:
the one who wasted away inside my grief — him I erased from my heart.
It was the lattice of your resting place, its praise alone, that kept me absorbed —
while your enemies spread across your garden a snare woven out of autumn.
Not one spark of your beauty of character could be found in this life of mine —
yet I am content with this much: that I lit up the doors and rooftops of the city.
The chapter of your Thawr, your Badr — I turned its pages and walked on.
It was only the retelling of your stories that ever gave me any delight.
O my short-sighted devotion, did you ever feel even this much of an ache in your heart —
that he who was the smile on the face of life was made to weep by grief for you.
