Cordillera Huayhuash Trek - 5 Days in Peru’s Andes

Cordillera Huayhuash is one of the most spectacular trekking regions in Peru. This film follows our five-day backpacking trek through high mountain passes, turquoise lakes, freezing camps and some of the best scenery I’ve ever seen. Before starting the trek, I spent a few days acclimating around Huaraz, including a hike to Laguna 69, where I climbed above 15,000 feet for the first time. A few days later, that elevation had become part of everyday life. We started our trek on August 24, 2026 and spent five days moving through the Cordillera Huayhuash, crossing high passes, camping beneath massive peaks and eventually walking out through Huayllapa. Day 1 brought our first major pass at Cacanan Punta and a 25°F night at camp. Day 2 took us toward Carhuacocha, surrounded by some of the biggest mountains in the Huayhuash. Day 3 was the day I had been waiting for: the high route overlooking Tres Lagunas, followed by the climb to Siula Pass. It may have been the most beautiful day I’ve ever had backpacking. By Day 4, something had changed. The mountains were still just as high, but somehow they didn’t feel quite as high anymore. Day 5 was the walk out. No more big passes, one last steep descent, a few cactus quills for Dave, a donkey wandering through town, and finally a very well-earned beer. Five days. High passes. Cold nights. A whole lot of climbing. And one incredible corner of Peru.
