Can you paint watercolor flowers without a preliminary sketch? 🌿💙
In this exercise, that is exactly what we’ll aim to do: suggest the flowers using washes, expressive gestures, and transparencies, rather than trying to outline every single petal.
Using blue flowers and their vases as our subject, we’ll explore how to create a painting that feels loose, fresh, and spontaneous. We’ll also work on table reflections, varying moisture levels, edges, and the interplay between defined shapes and soft, fading washes.
The key is letting go of the need to control everything. In watercolor, a simple wash can often convey far more than a meticulous drawing.
🎨 In this video, we’ll cover:
How to paint flowers without a preliminary sketch.
How to suggest petals and leaves with just a few brushstrokes.
How to build the vases without making the shapes look stiff.
How to paint reflections on the table.
How to make the most of transparencies and color blending.
How to achieve a looser, more spontaneous watercolor style.
If you want to loosen up your watercolor technique and learn to paint by suggestion rather than description, this exercise is for you.
If you enjoy watercolor and want to learn with me, you’ll find plenty more exercises, demonstrations, and resources on my channel to help you keep improving.
