Rain at night in the cedar avenue at Koyasan. The trunks go up out of sight on both sides, and between their roots stand rows of weathered stone monuments with moss over the names. Small stone lanterns glow along the path, their light blurred and doubled in the wet paving. Water runs off the eaves in threads. Far ahead the warm light of a wooden hall shows faintly through the rain. Somebody is sitting on the veranda with a koto.
Did you know? There are more than two hundred thousand stone monuments standing along this path. Warlords are here, and merchants, and people who spent their lives on opposite sides of the same wars, laid out along the same avenue under the same trees. Whoever you were in life, you are allowed to lie here. It is one of the few places where that was never argued about.
Twice a day, every day, a meal is carried to one particular room on this mountain. The monk it is brought to is not regarded as having died, but as sitting in meditation, and so the meal has continued without a break for something close to twelve hundred years. Whatever you make of it, the walk has been made morning and evening for longer than most countries have existed.
And the mountain itself is a town made only of temples, about eight hundred metres up, laid out on a flat basin ringed by peaks. On a wet night the mist comes up out of the valleys and fills the space between the trunks, and the lanterns turn into soft spheres of light with nothing solid around them.
