There is a number on a wall in your home, and a machine keeps the room above it. Take away the machine, the wall and the house, and you would not enjoy the afternoon.
So how did ancient humans survive winter, with nothing on that list? The answer is smaller than a finger, and you own one.
This is one winter, from the first frost to the thaw. Why your body starts burning extra fuel below about 82 degrees. Why a fire is only half the answer. How a louse tells us when people started wearing clothes. The bone needle that turned a blanket into a sleeve. The actual winter outfit of a man found in the Alps in 1991, with shoes stuffed with dry grass. Houses built from mammoth bones in Ukraine, and snow houses that stay 20 to 60 degrees inside at 49 below. Why winter was a math problem: ice cellars dug into frozen ground, rabbit starvation, and pemmican that kept for years. What people talk about by firelight (81 percent stories, in one study). And the hungry gap at the end of winter. It is how people survived winter before heating, and why your jacket, your walls and your freezer are the same old ideas.
Every number comes from a published source, and the uncertain ones are called uncertain. The sources are listed below.
