A scrap buyer weighed 86 rusted iron seats at six cents a pound. Then a stranger turned one over, and a widow learned what her husband had been doing for fifty years.
When Ruth Aldous calls a scrap dealer to clear her late husband’s drive shed, the price comes to thirty-three dollars. But the barn roof needs eleven thousand, and a passing collector has just found a maker’s mark under the rust. What follows takes her down the concession roads of Huron County, Ontario, through eighty-six hand-scratched tags, and into a memory from April 1957 that Arthur never spoke about.
This is a slow, human story about rural memory, overlooked value and the quiet things people keep for each other. If you grew up around old farm iron, we would love to hear what your family kept. Tell us in the comments where you saw one of these seats and who held on to it.
