The "→Second Arrow→" A Renowned Buddhist Teaching (found in the Sallata Sutta or The Arrow Sutta) that is widely discussed in mindfulness and psychological practices.
The Parable of the Two Arrows
• The First Arrow: Represents the unavoidable pain, hardship, loss, or physical discomfort that happens naturally in life. Nobody can escape the first arrow.
• The Second Arrow: Represents the mental reaction, anger, self-blame, catastrophizing, or rumination that we add on top of the original pain.
The core message of the teaching is that the first arrow is inevitable, but the second arrow is optional. Suffering is largely created by how we react to pain rather than the pain itself.
