15 Animated Movies Parents Should NEVER Have Rented

Not every cartoon was made for children. Long before animation became synonymous with family-friendly fun, filmmakers were using it to tell stories packed with graphic violence, nightmare imagery, sex, and genuinely bleak endings. Plenty of kids sat down expecting a sweet adventure and walked away haunted for years. In this countdown, we dig into 15 animated movies that were far too adult for their audience. We start with the cyberpunk apocalypse of Akira and the blood-soaked rabbit warren of Watership Down. Then we go through Disney's darkest misfire, The Black Cauldron, and the X-rated cult shock of Fritz the Cat. Along the way we cover The Plague Dogs, Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, The Secret of NIMH, Fire and Ice, American Pop, Wizards, the 1978 Lord of the Rings, Heavy Metal, Cool World, and The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat. Each one pushed the limits of what animation could get away with. If these films scarred your childhood, you're not alone.
