Its cassette transports held pitch better than gear costing several times more, which is why Aiwa boomboxes, mini stereo systems and portable audio players ended up in bedrooms across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. For a generation of listeners, an Aiwa hi-fi was the first real stereo they ever owned. Then the ground moved. Cheaper manufacturers attacked from below, premium brands squeezed from above, and Aiwa stayed loyal to cassette technology while the industry went digital. Losses passed five hundred million dollars, and in 2001 the company closed every factory it had in Japan. Sony took full ownership in 2002, delisted Aiwa from the Tokyo Stock Exchange after forty-one years, announced a relaunch, and then terminated the brand entirely in 2008. The name survives today on licensed products with no engineering connection to the originals.
