Prime Minister Mark Carney and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak speak with reporters in Ottawa on October 26, 2026, following the 2026 First Nations-First Ministers' meeting, the first dedicated meeting of its kind in more than two decades. Announcements include more than $2.5 billion over five years for First Nations emergency preparedness, more than $630 million over four years to renew and expand First Nations and Inuit policing, $260 million for a new Indigenous Workforce Readiness Fund, and plans to co-develop new revenue-sharing tools, including a potential First Nations sovereign wealth fund. The Prime Minister also said he is open to a process, co-developed with First Nations, to reform or abolish the Indian Act. Reporters also asked about Bill C-39 and Canada-U.S. trade talks.
