New footage from Lake Powell is revealing what decades of water kept hidden beneath a reservoir. As water levels fall, landscapes that disappeared after Glen Canyon Dam closed in 1963 are returning to view, including ancient archaeological sites, waterfalls, natural bridges, historic routes, and traces of communities that existed long before the reservoir.
Before Lake Powell flooded Glen Canyon, researchers conducted the largest archaeological salvage operation in American history. Their teams documented roughly 2,000 cultural sites, including stone structures, granaries, rock art, pottery, and other evidence of ancient life. Only a small percentage were excavated, leaving much of the canyon recorded but untouched.
Now, record-low reservoir water is exposing parts of that hidden landscape again. Cathedral in the Desert has reemerged, Gregory Natural Bridge has returned above the water, and the retreating reservoir is revealing layers of history from Indigenous communities, early explorers, mining ventures, and the construction of Glen Canyon Dam.
But this is not simply a story about rediscovery. Exposure can also threaten fragile archaeological resources through drying, erosion, sediment, and human disturbance.
In this video, we explore what 60 years underwater preserved, what the retreating lake is revealing, and what could emerge next.
