MythBusters — S12 E5 "Do Try This at Home" — Aired February 1, 2014 Adam and Jamie spent this episode testing four myths that any viewer could theoretically replicate at home, starting with Adam growing four sets of romaine lettuce plants using microwave-boiled water, stove-boiled water, unheated tap water, and no water at all to find out whether the viral claim that microwave-heated water kills plants has any truth behind it, then turning to Jamie demonstrating the chain fountain effect by dropping a long ball chain over the edge of a container and watching it arc impossibly upward against gravity before falling, and then setting fifteen metronomes running at slightly different tempos on a freely moving platform to find out whether they really do synchronize over time purely through mechanical vibration, before finishing with Jamie cooking up a classic black snake firework using sugar and sulfuric acid to see whether the dramatic expanding carbon tube that internet chemistry videos promise actually delivers.
