Chapter 5: Ionic and Covalent Compounds | Lecture 3 of 10
General Chemistry: The Complete College Lecture Series
This chapter covers Lewis dot symbols, ionic and molecular compounds, naming, polyatomic ions, acids, hydrates, formula mass, percent composition and empirical formulas.
This lecture covers ionic compounds and ionic bonding. A metal gives up electrons and a nonmetal gains them, forming positive and negative ions that are held together by electrostatic attraction in a repeating three-dimensional structure called a crystal lattice. We use the periodic table to predict common ion charges (Group 1 elements lose one electron, a group that needs three electrons forms a 3- ion, group 6 is two electrons away from a noble gas octet), compare ionic radii (for example sodium with 102 and chlorine larger after gaining an electron), and define lattice energy as the energy required to convert one mole of an ionic solid into gaseous ions. You will learn how lattice energy depends on the charges of the ions and the distance between them, why it is directly related to melting point and stability, and how to compare compounds such as sodium iodide with lithium compounds and arrange magnesium oxide and related compounds by lattice energy.
These are comprehensive general chemistry lecture videos, built to help students succeed in the course, with clear step-by-step explanations, closed captions and practice quiz questions.
