Discover the forgotten heroine of India’s freedom struggle. Durga Bhabhi, born Durgawati Devi, was far more than a revolutionary’s wife. She was an active participant in India’s freedom struggle and a respected member of the revolutionary network associated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Her name became legendary after she helped Bhagat Singh escape Lahore following the killing of British police officer J. P. Saunders in December 1928. With British police searching Lahore for the revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh changed his appearance, cut his hair, shaved his beard and adopted Western clothing. Durga Bhabhi posed as his wife, while her young son helped make the disguise appear like an ordinary family. Rajguru traveled with them in the role of a servant. Together, they passed through the British security network and escaped Lahore by train. But the story of Durga Bhabhi does not end with Bhagat Singh’s escape. She supported revolutionary activities, helped provide resources and shelter, and later faced the British authorities herself. Government records and historical accounts also remember her as one of the women who actively participated in the revolutionary movement. Her husband, revolutionary Bhagwati Charan Vohra, died in 1930 while testing a bomb on the banks of the Ravi. Even after this devastating personal loss, Durga Bhabhi continued to be associated with the struggle. This documentary explores the real story of Durga Bhabhi, her connection with Bhagat Singh, the daring Lahore escape, the role of women in the HSRA, and why this remarkable freedom fighter remains less remembered than many of her male contemporaries.
