The oarfish is the longest bony fish alive, up to about eight metres long, and in Japan it has been called the messenger from the sea god's palace and blamed as a warning of earthquakes. Yet almost nobody has ever put one on a menu. So why do we never eat the oarfish, the doomsday fish? There are four reasons, and the last one is a twist.
This is the story of a deep-sea giant we first filmed in its natural home in 2010, meat that one report compared to jelly, a fish that can drop the back of its own body, and a 2019 study that tested whether the oarfish really predicts earthquakes.
