Did Jesus Exist? His Story Fits the Mythic Hero Pattern | Dr. Aaron Adair

Dr. Aaron Adair's research - doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21905636 Did Jesus exist historically, or does his story belong to a pattern of legendary heroes? Dr. Aaron Adair joins Derek Lambert to explore a revised test of the Rank–Raglan hero pattern and what it could mean for the historical Jesus debate. Miraculous origins. A threatened childhood. Supernatural victory. A mysterious death. Across different cultures, heroic biographies repeat remarkably similar features. Adair examines 36 figures and asks whether those stories preserve memories of real people or give mythical characters the appearance of history. We explore familiar figures such as Heracles, Moses, Romulus, and Gilgamesh, alongside Fereydun, Māui, Cú Chulainn, and Sun Wukong. In this conversation: • Why earlier hero-pattern scoring produced contradictory results. • Adair’s revised 17 criteria and the supernatural victory a hero must achieve. • How stories develop as they travel across cultures. • Why a hero’s earliest appearance can differ dramatically from their later biography. • Why Adair excluded Jesus from the initial sample, then examined whether his story fits. • What this approach can—and cannot—tell us about whether Jesus existed. Adair’s model produces a 5.3% estimated historical rate for figures meeting his criteria. That is a starting point for the category, not a final probability that Jesus existed. Evidence specific to Jesus still has to be evaluated. Can we distinguish a real person surrounded by legends from a mythical figure written into history? That is the question at the heart of this discussion. Watch the case, weigh the evidence, and tell us which argument you find strongest—or most questionable.
