There is a small deduction on your payslip marked pension, and almost nobody explains where that money actually goes. The answer is that the word pension hides two completely opposite machines. Your State Pension has no pot. The National Insurance taken from your wages is used almost immediately to pay the people who are retired today, which is why the pension age keeps climbing towards sixty-seven and why the triple lock is argued about endlessly. It is a promise resting on tomorrow's workers, not savings with your name on it. You also need thirty-five qualifying years to receive the full amount. Your workplace pension is the opposite. Under automatic enrolment, at least eight per cent of a band of your salary is invested through providers like NEST, buying shares, government bonds, commercial property and infrastructure. British pension schemes hold well over two trillion pounds between them, which quietly makes ordinary workers one of the biggest owners in the economy, and one of the most passive. Then there is the part almost nobody talks about. The management fees. A fraction of a per cent sounds trivial, but taken every year across a forty-year working life it compounds quietly in somebody else's favour, and it decides how much of your money ever comes back to you. We also cover why the eight per cent minimum is a floor rather than a target, and why opting out to keep a little more in your pay packet usually means turning down free money. Badly Drawn Britain explains the hidden financial rules shaping ordinary British life.
