Cabinet Approves Two-Year Extension For Agniveers, Opens Pathway To Regular Service For All Eligible

The Union Cabinet has approved a major change in the Agnipath scheme, granting an additional two-year engagement period to Agniveers who would otherwise complete their initial four-year service tenure. Announcing the decision, Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani said that the remaining 75% of Agniveers, who were earlier expected to leave after four years, will now be offered an additional two-year engagement period. After completing the extended tenure, willing Agniveers will also get an opportunity to enrol as regular personnel in the Indian Armed Forces, subject to prescribed objective selection criteria. Under the revised arrangement, the existing provision for retaining 25% of Agniveers based on merit continues, while the additional opportunity provides a further pathway for eligible personnel to pursue a career in the Armed Forces.
