Why does a pregnancy test show two lines? Does it detect the baby, the fertilised egg, or a hormone? 🤔
A pregnancy test does not directly detect the baby. It detects a hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), which is produced by developing placental tissue after implantation.
In this episode of Vickeypedia, Dr. Vignesh explains the fascinating science behind a positive pregnancy test, from fertilisation to implantation and the appearance of that important second line.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO
🧬 What happens during fertilisation?
🔬 How does a zygote develop into a morula and blastocyst?
🌱 What is implantation, and why is it important?
🧪 What is hCG, and when does the body start producing it?
❤️ How does hCG help maintain early pregnancy?
💧 How do urine pregnancy tests detect hCG?
⏳ Why can a pregnancy test be negative initially and positive a few days later?
🌅 Why can first-morning urine be useful when testing early?
🩸 What is the difference between a blood beta-hCG test and a urine pregnancy test?
WHY DOES A PREGNANCY TEST BECOME POSITIVE?
After fertilisation, the developing embryo travels towards the uterus and continues to develop. Following implantation, the syncytiotrophoblast, a specialised part of the developing placental tissue, produces hCG.
This hormone enters the mother's bloodstream and eventually appears in her urine. When its concentration reaches the detection threshold of a pregnancy test, the test can show a positive result.
WHY MIGHT AN EARLY TEST BE NEGATIVE?
If you test too early, hCG levels may not yet be high enough for the test to detect. Testing around or after the expected period can improve accuracy. If the result is negative but your period remains delayed, repeat the test after a few days or seek medical advice.
Remember, a darker line on a home pregnancy test does not automatically mean a healthier pregnancy. Doctors may use clinical assessment, ultrasound and quantitative beta-hCG measurements when appropriate to evaluate an early pregnancy.
THE BIG TAKEAWAY
A pregnancy test doesn't detect the baby. It detects the hormonal signal produced after implantation — hCG.
