Puerto Rico’s Water Crisis Could Get Much Worse

Puerto Rico has now faced major water emergencies in two summers in a row, but the crisis happening today is very different—and potentially more serious—than what the island experienced last year. In July 2025, nearly 180,000 customers lost water during a massive breakdown that became so serious Governor Jenniffer González declared a state of emergency. One year later, Puerto Rico is once again dealing with widespread water outages, except now the island is fighting two problems simultaneously: a fragile water system that still has not been fully repaired and one of the worst periods of drought and heat seen in years.
