Stop Saying "Sad": Teach Sophisticated Words, Then Use Them in Sentences

In this reading lesson (final chapters of The Giver), Maddux pulls four advanced words from the book — notion, sorrowful, peculiar, melancholy — shows where each appears, explains meaning and part of speech with visual cues, then gives a 2-minute challenge: use every word in your own sentence. We also workshop the opinion paragraph: • Pick a stance (e.g. "loneliness is a serious problem for children" / "animals improve mental health") • Read your paragraph aloud — it must read as a clear opinion, not a list • Use feedback from earlier lessons, write the final copy, and submit Try at home: after a chapter, have your child choose 3–4 words they want to use, define each, then write one sentence per word stating its part of speech. For opinion writing, read it aloud and check whether the stance is obvious from start to finish.
