Copper Falls, Montana, 1880. The prospectors laughed at the bamboo tent and the woman who built it. They had log walls and iron stoves and a winter's worth of pride. She had split bamboo, two bolts of cloth, and a lacquered case her grandmother packed in Guangzhou. By February the same men who laughed were knocking on her door with frozen hands, and the part nobody could explain was how a thing made of cloth and clay held heat the cabins couldn't. This is the story of Zhen, a Chinese refugee who carried a grandmother's knowledge across an ocean and into a Montana gulch, and what happened when a hard winter proved the camp wrong about everything they thought they knew. What this story reveals — How a bamboo-and-cloth shelter survived a Montana winter that cracked log cabins The traditional Chinese tent technology that stored heat long after the fire died What the heated bench was and why a quarter of the wood did the work of the whole pile The lacquered case and the brush diagrams a grandmother drew for a winter she'd never see How a camp of proud men learned to build what they'd mocked Resources: Frontier House: Chinese in the American West – Thirteen/WNET – https://www.thirteen.org/wnet/frontie...
