As a single mom, I often feel guilty about letting my two-year-old watch TV. But instead of trying to eliminate TV altogether, I became very intentional about what she watches.
For much of my daughter’s first two years, I could usually recognize where the words, ideas, and concepts she used were coming from because I knew what she was being exposed to. In this video, I share how I slowly built her small rotation of shows, why I introduced them one at a time, what I looked for in shows like Little Bear, JoJo & Gran Gran, The Magic School Bus, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Family Matters, and Handyman Hal, and what happened when I stopped trying to turn TV into school and simply watched what she did with the information.
That experience eventually became Manicured Media: personalized children’s media recommendations built around the individual child, their environment, and what their parents actually want for them.
Because most parents don’t have countless hours to sit and watch children’s television—and I think they deserve a little breathing room, too.
