Over 22,000 streams across our debut album THE SPIRIT in just two weeks. That is a wonderful start to the Open Secret story, and it gave us even more reason to put everything we could into the next chapter. To everyone who listened, shared the album, left a comment or came back for another play: THANK YOU.
Now, here is CAUGHT IN A LIGHT.
The second Open Secret album continues something we have never attempted before at The AOR Radio. Our ambition is to make three albums with this band, building a catalogue with a recognisable musical identity. We want you to get to know Open Secret across several records, discover your favourite songs and eventually argue with us about which album is the best. That last part is practically an AOR tradition.
THE SOUND OF OPEN SECRET
If THE SPIRIT introduced the band, CAUGHT IN A LIGHT gives us room to develop what we loved about that first record.
The keyboards remain at the heart of the sound. There is plenty of forward motion in the midtempo songs, with strong choruses and the kind of melodic approach that puts the song first. We wanted to hold on to the atmosphere of the debut while giving this album its own reasons to stay in your rotation.
Our love of AOR has always lived in the details. A keyboard phrase that makes you turn the volume up before the vocal has even started. A verse that leaves just enough room for the chorus to open up. A melody that sounds familiar by the second listen and has you singing along by the third.
That is the feeling we keep chasing.
This album is for listeners who enjoy keyboard driven AOR, melodic rock and the warmth of the classic 1980s sound. For those who still believe a midtempo song can have enormous drive, and that a great chorus is a perfectly good reason to play a track three times in a row.
Dare and Heartland are two reference points for the musical direction we love. Of course, we cannot and should not compete with classic bands like those. Their records were made by magnificent musicians, singers and producers, and our admiration for that craft is a large part of why we care about this music in the first place.
But soundwise, that is the direction of our ambition: melodic, atmospheric, keyboard rich AOR with memorable songs and choruses that mean something to the listener.
And we are proud of the result.
HOW THIS ALBUM WAS MADE
Open Secret is an AI assisted music project. We are open about the tools, and we also want to give you a little insight into the work behind the finished album.
These songs went through more than 200 versions in total. That means repeated generations, revisions, rejected takes, rewritten passages and a lot of listening before deciding what deserved a place on the record.
The work involves shaping lyrics and song structures, adjusting prompts, exploring vocal character through persona settings and regenerating material when the delivery, phrasing or arrangement does not feel right. Sometimes a version has a promising chorus but the verse falls flat. Sometimes the sound is close, but the voice has lost the character we are looking for. Back it goes.
Then come further revisions, mastering and listening to the songs together as an album. A track has to work on its own, but it also has to belong alongside the others.
There are plenty of versions you will never hear. Choosing what to leave out is a substantial part of the process.
The musical taste behind those decisions comes from decades of listening to AOR and melodic rock. We know the records we love, the moments that still give us goosebumps and how quickly a promising song can lose its way. The challenge is to keep working until we have something we actually want to play again ourselves.
ABOUT THAT COVER PHOTO…
For anyone concerned about the rather dark conditions during the “photo shoot”: no band members were harmed.
The guitarist did, however, stumble when the bass player, who was holding the flashlight, switched it off before anyone had managed to turn the other lights on.
Apparently, being caught in a light requires someone to leave it on.
The bass player’s lighting duties are currently under review.
CHAPTER TWO OF THREE
The response to THE SPIRIT has made this follow-up especially important to us. We wanted to give those of you who enjoyed the debut a reason to return, and new listeners a good place to discover Open Secret.
OPEN SECRET.
THE SPIRIT was the beginning.
CAUGHT IN A LIGHT is chapter two.
