In this video, the speaker explains where the excess heat from global warming is going in the Earth system and what the consequences are. More than 90% of excess heat is absorbed by the ocean, contributing to sea level rise. 3% is absorbed by the cryosphere, leading to ice melt, and in turn leads to a weakening of the global ocean conveyor belt and to an amplification of global warming through a positive feedback loop when ice melts. 3% of excess heat is also absorbed by land, causing more droughts and wildfires. And only 1% of the excess heat remains in the atmosphere. But a warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor, triggering a positive feedback loop (i.e., warming causes more warming) as water vapor is a powerful greenhouse gas.
