Anthony Marinelli and legendary keyboardist Greg Phillinganes come together to recreate “Baby Be Mine” from the ground up, diving deep into the sounds, performances and production details that make the track so special. Anthony reconstructs the synth and drum programming, while Greg performs the piano and synthesizer parts, bringing his unmistakable feel and musicality to the recreation. To get even closer to the character of the original recording, many of the same instruments used during the making of Thriller are brought back into the process. We also add live guitar, trumpet, saxophone and trombone to complete the arrangement. And we go deep. From the synth bass and keyboard sounds to the LinnDrum programming, arrangement, performance details and even the varispeed process used to match the sound and feel of the original recording, this is our attempt to understand “Baby Be Mine” from the inside out. As Greg says in the video, one of the most important reasons for doing something like this is to preserve this knowledge for future generations. This isn’t about replacing the original.
