You will pass through a man-made tunnel carved directly into the mountain rock to reach the official entrance checkpoint of Caminito del Rey. Tunnel Options at the North Access When you arrive at the northern access point near the El Kiosko Restaurant, you must choose one of two pedestrian tunnels cut through the mountain to reach the control booth. The Shorter Tunnel (1.5 km total walk): Located about 200 meters before El Kiosko. This tunnel is narrow, illuminated, and cuts directly through the rock. Passing through it brings you out onto a scenic forest path that leads straight to the official ticket control cabin in about 20 minutes. The "Túnel Grande" longer tunnel (2.7 km total walk): Located right next to El Kiosko. This is a larger tunnel. It leads to a longer, highly scenic route through the pine forest where you can look out at the Gaitanejo Reservoir and view old engineering cave houses historically used by local workers. We took the shorter tunnel which is the 1.5 km walk. Historical Caves Along the Trail Aside from the initial access tunnels, the main hiking trail itself passes by several unique geological formations and historical cave dwellings, such as the Casa de Farraya and the Sierra Parda cave houses. These were carved directly into the valley walls and inhabited by the early twentieth-century workers who built the original dam and walkway.
