REVIEWS:
Dream Garden by Kuna: A very unique map. I like how you start in the little house, which is also very cozy and already invites you to explore. The atmosphere outside is very pleasant, and the concept with the different pathways that you can take in any order is very interesting.
There is a good mix between outdoor tasks in garden settings and indoor tasks in greenhouses or tunnels, the map is extremely varied, and the creature cards as well as the corresponding gallery are very, very beautifully made. It is very detailed, especially considering the size.
The only things that bothered me were a handful of decisions that are hard to understand: You can permanently lock yourself out of cards twice. In one case, you could say “be a bit clever,” and that is fair, but if I had brought Lumos earlier at some point, I would no longer have been able to reach the Bowtruckle card, which I cannot know as someone seeing the map for the first time.
Then there are the pixies at the iron lift, which block you without you really being able to get rid of them beforehand. It is doable, but I would have understood it more if they simply attacked normally.
What bothered me the most was that the Lumos clouds were not grabbable, even though the jumps to them are quite difficult. I died twice because of that and lost a lot of progress, which was a real shame and could have been prevented by making them grabbable. I understand leaving that out for easy jumps, but for longer jumps it feels a bit mean toward casual players.
The maze was difficult, but I think that was intentional, so I see that neutrally. Overall, it is a good maze.
I would give this map a 9/10.
Diffindo Challenge by DouziSmol: The nice thing about DouziSmol’s maps is that they stay stylistically very close to the original, which creates a certain counterbalance to, for example, maps by me, which are more focused on regularly exploring new ground in this form.
And I have to say, I think this is his best map. Wonderful vibe, very beautiful design, many, many references to the original games, and creative secrets. The map is genuinely a lot of fun. It also really lives up to the name Diffindo Challenge.
Some secrets are very difficult, but not unfair. If you really search, you can figure them out, but you have to be extremely thorough.
My only negative point was the enemy spam in the second maze toward the end. If I had at least been able to get rid of the plants, it would have been manageable, but I could only stun the Venomous Tentaculas, so I was under constant stress there, especially since there is only one save book before the maze.
At times, I had to go into the menu just to have enough time to think about how to get out of the situation again, and I still died once. That was a bit too stressfull.
Still, overall, it is a strong recommendation and also one of the best outside maps. Since it is a bit more basic, although intentionally so, I give it a solid 8/10.
