Sometimes I still have to stop and think about where sharing my story has taken me 🥹❤️ From creating videos in my own home and sharing my family, culture and heritage with the world… to sitting down with the Mayor of Toronto alongside my mom ?! 🇨🇦 My mom cooked some of our Hakka food for Mayor Olivia Chow, and we talked about the similarities and differences between our Hakka and Cantonese backgrounds, what it means to preserve culture in Toronto, and some of the issues that matter to families — from the cost of living and property taxes to programs and opportunities for kids (as a single mom I had questions 👏🏾🤪) What made this moment even more special was seeing two Chinese diasporic stories meet right here in Toronto. My family’s Hakka-Jamaican-Guyanese 🇨🇳🇯🇲🇬🇾 roots are such a huge part of why I create in the first place: to preserve the stories, food, language and lessons that can so easily disappear with time. And honestly… sometimes I can’t believe the doors that content has opened for me. This was another one of those moments that reminded me that when you share your story authentically, you never know where it can take you. A big thank you to Mayor Olivia Chow for taking the time to sit down with us and have such an open conversation ❤️ And whether or not you follow politics, one thing you’ve probably noticed is that Mayor Olivia Chow is alwaaays out in the community 🙏🏽 That was something I appreciated seeing firsthand — being able to have a conversation with her beyond the title of “Mayor” and talk about the people and communities that make Toronto what it is. #hakka #chinese #jamaica #caribbean #OliviaChow #Toronto #TorontoMayor
