Mechwarrior Online Escaping Death

I dropped on Crimson Strait, Skirmish Mode with the Panther 10P, running one of my all-ammo support builds. This little Mech is equipped with a Light AC5 for pinpoint ballistic damage and dual SRM 4s for close-range burst damage, while the Laser AMS provides the only energy-based weapon and some protection against incoming missiles. The Panther 10P is not a Mech I would choose for a straight one-on-one fight. It simply does not have the armour, firepower or hardpoints to stand toe-to-toe with heavier opponents. Instead, the idea is to stay mobile, support the team, poke at exposed targets and use the SRMs to finish damaged armour or tear into exposed components and internals. This Crimson Strait match gave me several very close encounters with the Grim Reaper. The first came after I completely misjudged a step in front of me and ended up dropping right beside several enemy Mechs. Not exactly the ideal position for a lightly armoured Panther! I fired what I could and immediately started looking for a way out. The second close call came when two enemy Mechs decided I had become enough of a nuisance with the Light AC5 and SRM fire. Thankfully, the heavier friendly Mech beside me gave me an opportunity to survive the encounter. I also managed to catch a Hunchback at just the right moment when he turned his attention elsewhere, leaving his rear armour exposed. Then came another interesting encounter with a small enemy carrying a Binary Cannon. He seemed determined to make sure the Panther 10P did not survive the match, but fortunately my teammates arrived before he could finish the job. This match really shows what I enjoy about the Panther 10P. It is not about overpowering the enemy. It is about movement, positioning, supporting heavier Mechs and taking advantage of those moments when an enemy exposes a weakness. Sometimes the small Mech can be a surprisingly big problem.
