UNHEARD FRANK SINATRA: Sept 1946 Interview With DJ IRA COOK KNX Radio Wallich's Music City Hollywood

Here is another audio rarity from the career of Frank Sinatra: a 1940s radio interview as Sinatra sits down for an extended live interview with disc jockey Ira Cook of radio station KNX in Hollywood. The interview was conducted on September 29, 1946 at Wallich's Music City which was located on the corner of Sunset and Vine Streets in Hollywood. Capitol Records studio was originally located directly above the record store. In 1946 Frank Sinatra was at the height of his popularity, and Cook mentions that 300-400 Sinatra fans are standing outside the store watching the interview. Sinatra and Cook can be heard reacting to camera flash bulbs during the interview. Sinatra discusses his Columbia recordings, the movie "It Happened In Brooklyn" which he was filming at MGM studio and his radio show "Songs By Sinatra". The audio, with varying quality, is recorded directly from a 78 RPM acetate disc from the RIC ROSS Frank Sinatra Collection. Mr. Ross is widely recognized as the leading expert on Frank Sinatra's career and amassed an archive of thousands of Sinatra recordings over a 60-year period. About IRA COOK: Composer, actor and disc jockey Ira Cook was born on August 17, 1916 in Duluth, Minnesota. He later moved to the West Coast and attended Stanford University, graduating in 1938. His Los Angeles broadcasting career began after his service in World War II and spanned 26 years, 16 of which were at KMPC. In 1961, he began broadcasting programs over the Armed Forces Radio Service. He joined ASCAP in 1958, and collaborated musically with Mort Greene and Ray Gilbert. His popular-song compositions include "Pony Tail", "Sunday Barbeque", and "Your Theme". Ira also had ten TV and film roles from 1953-1970. Cook died in Los Angeles on May 15, 2007 at the age of 92.
