In 1884, two machinists in Cincinnati started a company making screws and taps. Within forty years, it became the largest machine tool builder in the United States. During World War II, the Oakley factory complex produced one machine every seventeen minutes — one of every twelve machine tools built in America carried the Cincinnati name.
The company pioneered numerical control with MIT in 1952, built the first commercially available computer-controlled industrial robot in 1973, and led the transition from manual machining to CNC automation. Cincinnati Milacron did not just build machines. It built the technology that made modern manufacturing possible.
Then it was taken apart. The machine tool division was sold in 1998. The robot division went to ABB. The cutting fluids business was separated. The name was shortened. The headquarters was lost. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and was eventually acquired by a casket manufacturer. The factory complex that armed two world wars is now largely empty.
This is the story of how America's most important machine tool company was broken into pieces — and what it means for everyone who still earns a living cutting metal.
