AUA Focus Series E44: Focus on National Identity

In this episode of the AUA Media Lab’s Focus Series, Dr. Arshak Balayan, assistant professor at AUA, speaks with Dr. David Miller, professor at the University of Oxford, who visited Armenia for the first time to deliver a keynote address at an international conference on national identity hosted by AUA’s Center for Ethics in Public Affairs. Professor Miller, a long-time scholar of national identity, justice, and immigration, explores how these issues resonate with Armenia’s current challenges. Together, they discuss what distinguishes nations and ethical communities from other types of communities, how informal emotional attitudes alone cannot sustain large societies, the necessity of ethical norms in regulating relations within nations, the extent to which individuals and states can morally prioritize their compatriots over others, and the boundary where such bias crosses into unethical territory.
