The gardens are a lovely mix of historic planting and cottage garden style, including the medieval herb and physic gardens, kitchen garden, orchard, cloister garden and colourful herbaceous borders. Michelham Priory has a fascinating history too. Founded in 1229 as an Augustinian priory, it survived the Dissolution under Henry VIII, later became a private estate and suffered a devastating fire in 1927. Today, the house, gardens and surrounding buildings offer a glimpse into the many different layers of its past.
