On 23 October 2026, fire largely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus — the "Eagle's Nest" above Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. Built for Hitler's regime in 1937–38, it survived the RAF raid of April 1945 and the 1952 demolition of the Berghof, and became a mountain restaurant, a tourist icon and, belatedly, a place of historical documentation. This film tells the building's real history — the coerced takeover of the Obersalzberg, the road and tunnel built by about 3,800 workers, the myths about Hitler's use of it — and what is officially known about the fire.
What is not known: police suspect arson, and a 33-year-old suspect has been provisionally placed in a psychiatric hospital by court order. He has not been tried or convicted. The motive and the fire investigation remain under investigation as of 25 October 2026. No decision on rebuilding has been made.
