Why did Wildwood's neon motels start disappearing
just as America began calling them treasures?
In Wildwood, New Jersey, a working family's week at the shore came with plastic palms, a swimming pool, and a name like the Caribbean or the Satellite. Follow Lou and Will Morey from their Florida trip to the motel boom of the 1950s and '60s, when more than 200 motels rose on one small island. A $15,000 loan helped Will and Jackye Morey begin their own motel business.
By 2004, the Satellite faced a bulldozer while Will's son Jack was helping lead the effort to preserve the style. Behind the neon were families trying to earn a year's living in three summer months. From the Jade East to the Chateau Bleu, the film follows the owners, the condo boom, and the choices facing a shore town whose beaches still draw crowds.
Historical society records, preservation research, and reporting with owners and longtime guests ground the story. Their accounts leave room for both the memories of families who lost a familiar place and the decisions of those who spent decades keeping it running—and for you to draw your own conclusions.
