Roman prisons were nothing like the modern prisons we imagine today. There was no standard daily routine, no familiar cell block, and no single experience shared by every prisoner. So what did people in Roman custody actually do all day? For many, the answer was surprisingly simple: wait. They ate and drank what reached them, dealt with basic needs, listened to the world beyond the door, and waited for officials, information, movement, or whatever came next. And depending on whether someone was a citizen, enslaved, wealthy, or surrounded by powerful connections, that experience could look very different. In this episode of ROME UNCOVERED, we step behind the locked door to explore what confinement in Ancient Rome may actually have been like—and why the biggest uncertainty was often what happened when that door finally opened.
