Winging Montreal – Episode 35 A major milestone has been reached on the new Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge: the first new span is now fully connected from one side of the crossing to the other. In this August 2026 aerial update, we fly the entire construction zone for a close look at the completed bridge deck, active construction areas, cranes and marine equipment, as well as the extensive reconstruction of Highway 40 leading toward the new bridge. The flight also reveals something that is easy to overlook while driving across — the incredible natural setting surrounding this vital connection. We pass Île aux Tourtes itself, the wooded island that gives the bridge its name, surrounded by the waters and islands of the Lake of Two Mountains. On the return flight, we travel west to east toward Montreal’s West Island, with the morning sun reflecting across the water and giving a completely different perspective of the crossing. For West Island and Vaudreuil-Dorion residents who have lived through years of congestion, restrictions and construction, seeing the new bridge finally stretch continuously across the water is an important moment. It is not open to traffic yet, but seeing the span connected from shore to shore makes just how far this enormous project has come very real. Join me above Montreal for another unique aerial look at one of the region’s most important infrastructure projects.
