Urdu Bagh (اُردُو بَاغ - उर्दू बाग़): “I have a thesis that Ghalib could not have written his poetry in the way he did if Mir Taqi Mir had not existed before him. Mir gave a poetic language to Ghalib. Of course, Ghalib polished Mir’s language. And it was not only Ghalib; in fact, Mir gave this language to the Urdu poets of the eighteenth century,” says Prof Anisur Rahman, whose latest book The Essential Mir has recently been published by HarperCollins India. Prof Anisur Rahman, a bilingual poet, author and translator, and former Head of the Department of English at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, is in conversation with broadcaster Pervaiz Alam on the Cine Ink podcast Urdu Bagh. Mir Taqi Mir is often called the "God of Poetry" (Khuda-e-Sukhan) in Urdu literature. Born in 1723 in Agra, he later moved to Delhi and witnessed its traumatic sack by Nadir Shah in 1739. His ghazals are famous for their intense melancholy, emotional depth, and unmatched elegance. Mir transformed Urdu poetry by blending Persian sophistication with authentic Indian feelings and everyday language. Even today, lines from Mir’s divan remain among the most quoted and loved verses in the Urdu-speaking world. Mir died in 1810, the year when the great Urdu poet Ghalib was about to turn 13 Prof. Rahman has authored several books, including The Essential Ghalib, Hazar Rang Shaairi & Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi: The Wonderful World of Urdu Ghazals.
