This recording was captured along the shoreline of Kathleen Lake in Kluane National Park during the first signs of spring. Most of the lake remained frozen, but small pockets of open water had begun to appear along the shore. Water quietly moved beneath the ice while snow-covered mountains stood beneath shifting northern skies.
Kathleen Lake was shaped by glacial movement over thousands of years. During spring, the frozen surface gradually fractures and retreats from the shoreline, creating melt channels, drifting ice, and the first return of open water after a long Yukon winter.
This location required roughly a two hour drive from Whitehorse into Kluane National Park. While the lake may look calm in this recording, the reality was a little different. The wind was so strong that I spent more time wrestling with my tripod than filming. Every gust seemed determined to send it tumbling across the shoreline. After a brief standoff between me, the tripod, and the Yukon wind, I managed to capture about ten uninterrupted minutes before nature won the argument. Even so, standing beside the thawing lake, watching winter slowly loosen its grip, felt incredibly grounding. So good for the soul.
There are no voices, no music.
