Within or around the vast park are Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and Nara National Museum. Nara Park is home to over 1,600 deer. The deer have been carefully protected for over 1,300 years as "messengers of the gods" of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. During the Nara period (8th century), Nara was the capital of Japan. A centralized state (Ritsuryo system) centered on the emperor was established, and Buddhism received generous protection. Nara Toukae is held in Nara Park every August. The lights will be on from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Admission is free. Various Obon events are held throughout Japan in mid-August. Obon is a traditional event to welcome the spirits of ancestors. Mantoro festival is a Shinto ritual in which about 3,000 lanterns at Kasuga Taisha Shrine are lit. It is held every year in February and August. Kasuga Taisha Shrine was founded in 768. It is dedicated to the guardian deity of the Fujiwara clan. In the Middle Ages, it possessed vast estates throughout the country and wielded considerable power.
