Produced by El Mastaba Centre for Egyptian Folk Music Production managment: Mahmoud Sharshar Mohamed Abo Elmakarem Filmography and editing: Mamdouh ElKady Scenario and director: Zakaria Ibrahim Shafika (1952- 2011) Despite social traditions that give men the field of folk singing, a few women, such as Badreya El Sayed and others, managed to draw attention to themselves and take part in Egypt’s folk singing scene. Among those female artists, Shafika, was the queen of folk singing in Egypt without resorting to the official publicity channels. She built her career through the gigs she did in the streets in different provinces all over Egypt, along with the aid of cassette tapes that she recorded with the help of a number of talented musicians and composers from Tanta, her native city. These factors helped to-broaden her popularity all over Egypt. This film documents, not only the interviews with her family, fans and artists who worked with her in the performances she led, but also includes footage of the gigs she conducted which were recorded and collected from her fans and followers.
